As you may know, I have chosen to spend most of my summer at my family's Biodynamic Certified Organic Vegetable and Blueberry Farm (It is the biggest Certified Organic vegetable farm in Canada, BC). My biggest motivation was to spend time cultivating relationships with my younger siblings who are 10, 14, 16 and 18 years old. (Remember I am the eldest of 12) Between farm work, my family and my business, life has been more than entertaining!!

One of the highlights of my summer has been managing the blueberry fields - that is where I am right now working on this newsletter! It puts a smile on my face to be working outside surrounded by mountains eating one of the most nutritious foods in the world!
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, mmmmmmmm, blueberries!!!

Health-E Tip: Wild About Blueberries
Why blueberries rank number 1

Fresh, frozen, canned or dried, blueberries have emerged as the top antioxidant capacity fruit in a laboratory testing procedure called ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbency Capacity) developed by the USDA*1. ORAC has become the definitive measurement of antioxidant capacity.

What are Antioxidants?!
Have you ever left a cut apple out on the counter for it to turn brown on you? That apple was attacked by free radicals.

Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules which attach themselves to other cells. When a cell has a free radical attached to it, it is less capable of doing its job. It is as if the the cell has a heavy weight to carry around.

You have free radicals running throughout your body. Free radicals have been associated with such things as cancer, heart disease and the effects of aging.

Antioxidants, found the most in blueberries, come to the rescue and neutralize the free radicals to keep us healthy. Recent USDA studies measured the antioxidant activity of more than 40 commercially available fruits and vegetables and ranked blueberries #1.

The Benefits of Blueberries

Antioxidants have been known to be useful for many conditions including: Antiaging, Cancer Prevention, Urinary Tract Health, and Vision Enhancement.

Eat your blueberries!

Workplace Wellness Tip: How To Be On Top
The most challenging thing for me this summer has been managing my time between my business commitments and my commitments to managing the blueberry fields on the farm. I thought I could do both successfully, and for the most part I am, it has just been challenging getting there.

The biggest obstacle was taking on too much. Does that ever happen to you? I call it ICDE [pronounced ick-day] Syndrome. I can Do Everything Syndrome! I can return phone calls on time, submit proposals, market new projects, write articles, publish my book, manage the blueberry field, weigh people's berries, do my business payroll, pay the pickers, arrange for pick ups, and take care of all the details in between, not just some, but ALL of the details in between, plus I can start new projects too! Typical of an over achiever, isn't it! It took me about 1 week to recognize that I had over committed myself and it has taken another week to get back on top of things.

Do you ever notice how drained, worn thin, and out of balance you feel when you are over committed or have a lot on your plate, or when your to do list seems to have legs of it's own running a competition with your coworker, boss, or even your friends.

The stress that you feel from being overwhelmed can in fact produce those nasty free radicals running through your body.

Here are a few principles to live by for people who experience this overwhelm, or have ICDE Syndrome every once in a while. With these principles you will be able to get the job done AND still have time for yourself at the end of the day, while staying in control:
  1. List: Make a list of everything that needs to be done.
  2. Toss: Toss out and trash the little things that are time wasters in the project. These are activities that would be nice to do , but do not have to be done.
  3. Be Choosy: Pick and chose what your responsibilities are going to be first. Do what you WANT to do then see tip 4.
  4. Delegate: This is important in being a successful leader. Delegate tasks to the people who best suit them and especially delegate what you prefer not to do! It will lighten your load substantially.

Yummy Recipe: Extraordinary Blueberry Crisp

You will need:

  • 4 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats (I prefer the slow cooking oats, but the quick cooking ones are great too!)
  • 1/3 cup butter (soft is best)
  • 3 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp. four

    Directions:
  • Mix the vanilla and 1 tbsp. flour with the blueberries and place them in an 8X8 pan. If you use frozen blueberries, use 2 tbsp. of flour.
  • In a separate bowl mix oats with brown sugar, cinnamon, 1 tbsp. flour and adding butter last. I like to use my hands to mix these ingredients to keep the oats in tact and thoroughly mix in the butter.
  • Once the oats mixture is combine to a crumbly mixture, pour it evenly over top of the blueberries in the pan.
  • Place in oven heated to 350, bake for 30-40 minutes...frozen berries will take a bit longer to cook through (maybe 5-10 minutes more, check the center!)
  • Serve warm or hot with ice-cream, milk, cream, soy, or yogurt.

This is a great desert for when you need something quick and easy...and YUMMY!
